Previously offered: February 28, 2013. Contact us about the next offering.

The objective of this 115 hour, five month course is to introduce the concepts of ayurveda as a tool for yoga teachers.  Ayurveda is the sister science of yoga.  Tools for assessing individual students and the class, adapting postures and practices, and appropriate sequencing in developing a tridoshic class will be explored.  The language of alignment, including addressing the impact of the practice in the body through simple ayurveda terms will be explored.

Prerequisites - Applicants must have practiced yoga for at least two years.  You must have completed the Contemplative Hatha Yoga program or equivalent, preferably from a Yoga Alliance registered school. The Director of the program will interview you to review your background before admittance to the program.

Ayurveda is the sister science of yoga.  It teaches assessment skills and offers tools to support balance and harmony within each individual.  The program will serve as an introduction of ayurvedic concepts and how to integrate them while teaching yoga classes. We will learn how to evaluate the doshic energy of a class, adaptations and appropriate sequencing for creating a tridoshic class and  maturing your ability to personalize asana for individual needs.

Techniques - The way yogasana is taught will affect each dosha. Our study of many different techniques will assist in developing an understanding of asana, pranayama, and meditation in relationship to each dosha.  We will explore alignment details to enhance the tridoshic expression of each asana.  We will learn the power of the pranavayu.  We will explore mudra, mantra, meditation and marma points to enhance the doshic impact of the asana.

Methodology - Methodology will focus on applying the ayurveda guidelines in a classroom setting.  We will explore adapting yoga flows for each dosha, in each season, for the time of day, the geographical location and more.  We will explore the language of alignment and use of simple ayurvedic terms to guide and educate students.

Western Anatomy and Yogic Anatomy - Ayurvedic anatomy and the related western anatomy will be reviewed, including the digestive system, taste, olfactory, visual and auditory senses.  We will review ayurvedic anatomy including the  dosha, dhatu, srotansi and marma points.

Philosophy and Lifestyle -
We will discuss the philosophy of ayurveda related to lifestyle supporting a life of balance and harmony.  We will explore everything from the shat karmas, pulse assessment, flow of the subdosha, diet and related lifestyle choices to support integrating wholeness.
